The Downtown, or “Baixa”, is well know for being the centre of past Portuguese wealth for many hundreds of years and for the devastation after the 1755 earthquake that killed tens of thousands, with some estimates being as high as half of the 200,000 people in Lisbon at the time.
Then we start climbing. We go by Sé de Lisboa, our iconic cathedral, then the Roman theatre and all the way up to Graça, home of some great bakeries and jawdropping views. Then we go down past the one of the oldest open markets in the world, “Feira da Ladra”, all the way to Alfama, birth place of Fado music, around Martin Moniz, then up again to Campo Santana and down to Avenida da Liberdade.
